From Silence to Strength: Girls Speak Up Against Harmful Practices
August 14, 2024
In Tharaka-Nithi County, girls face high rates of female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage and other risks to their future. ChildFund’s Jukumu Letu (“Our Responsibility”) project brings together community leaders, parents, teachers and young people themselves – like these outspoken youth at a ChildFund-supported rescue center for girls – to raise awareness of these harmful practices and put a stop to them.
Through this project (2018–2021), we saw an increase in children’s involvement in their own protection: The highest increases were in children’s voices being considered on protection issues affecting them (about 91%), children empowered to actively speak out about child abuse (about 90%), and creation of avenues for children to air grievances and give their opinion on issues affecting them (about 82%). This increased involvement is just one of the project’s positive child protection outcomes. Learn more about the impact of this project here
