Supporting Children Before, During and After Emergencies

In recent years, Kenya has faced a series of climate crises that have severely impacted the lives of its children. Natural disasters such as droughts and floods have become increasingly frequent and intense, exacerbating vulnerabilities in communities already struggling with poverty. For instance, the recent El Niño-related flooding from October 2023 to January 2024 resulted in the deaths of at least 174 people and displaced over 500,000 households. These events disrupt daily life and hinder children’s access to education and essential services, leaving them more susceptible to violence, neglect, and exploitation.

Despite the Kenyan government’s efforts to provide free education, many children still face significant barriers to learning due to these climate-induced emergencies. The impact of climate change on food security further complicates this issue; approximately 2.8 million individuals in arid and semi-arid regions are experiencing crisis or acute food insecurity. As families struggle to cope with rising food prices and loss of livelihoods, many children are forced to drop out of school to support their families or are left without the necessary resources for their education.

At ChildFund, we recognize that in times of crisis, children are often the last to receive the support they need. Our commitment is to focus on the most vulnerable—providing not just immediate relief but also long-term solutions that address the root causes of these challenges.

How we Support Children & Families after Emergencies

We Provide Relief

To Children, Families  and Communities affected  by emergencies in the form of food,  clean water and  other essentials, like blankets and hygiene kits. Depending on the situation, we may distribute these items directly to affected families or give them funds  to purchase what  they need most.

We Establish Child-Centered Spaces

To give Children a safe place  to play, learn and just  be kids – activities that are crucial to their recovery from the trauma of emergencies.  These spaces protect the children and allow their parents time to find shelter, food, water and other help they need.

We Promote Education

On disaster preparedness so that  when emergencies happen, children, families and communities  know how to respond and can recover more quickly.

Featured Project

Building the Resilience of Communities Affected by Drought in Marsabit

In response to the severe drought that affected many regions of Kenya in 2023, ChildFund launched an emergency response project in Marsabit and Turkana counties aimed at saving lives and improving the well-being of families impacted by this crisis. The project targeted children, pregnant and lactating women, people living with disabilities, and the elderly. By April 2023, the initiative supported approximately 3,500 families in accessing life-saving commodities and services.

Key interventions included cash transfers to facilitate access to nutritious food, rehabilitation of water facilities for safe drinking water, provision of animal feed to sustain livestock and milk production, and school feeding programs to encourage children to stay in school. Additionally, the project promoted peaceful coexistence among communities competing for scarce resources. To learn more about this initiative, watch this video.

Helping Communities to Combat Drought

ChildFund supports families affected by drought through emergency food distribution, safe water access, cash transfers, school feeding programs, dignity kits for girls and boys, and animal feed for livestock.
