Many communities in Kenya face significant challenges due to the increasing frequency and severity of environmental-related disasters, such as droughts and floods, which disrupt livelihoods and exacerbate food insecurity. These challenges are compounded by resource-based conflicts, as communities compete for dwindling water and arable land, leading to tensions and violence.
Our environmental sustainability programs aim to strengthen the resilience of communities affected by disasters through sustainable disaster risk reduction programs and environmental mitigation and adaptation initiatives in schools and communities.
Additionally, we work with communities to address issues related to peace and protection, stemming from environmental and resource-based conflicts, both at the household and community levels.
Facts and figures from 2024 data.
ChildFund is strengthening communities & capacity to prepare for and adapt to the adverse effects of environmental change. This includes equipping them with the skills and resources needed to engage in alternative livelihoods, ensuring they build resilience and can thrive despite related challenges.
ChildFund is actively promoting smart agriculture, an integrative approach that helps farmers transform agri-food systems toward green and environmentally resilient practices. Through smart agriculture, we support communities in adopting sustainable farming techniques, improving agricultural productivity, enhancing resilience to environmental change, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This includes introducing resilient crops, promoting soil conservation, and providing training on sustainable water management practices.
We work with communities to re-green areas and restore degraded lands. Together, we create tailored solutions to enhance restoration practices through tree planting, improving access to clean water, and introducing drought-resistant crops and livestock for sustainable farming. For instance, through the Re-greening Africa project in Nairobi, Makueni, and Kajiado counties, over 600 youth, 600 children in more than 30 schools, and 300 women planted over 150,000 high- value fruit and medicinal trees, contributing to conservation and improved food and nutrition security.
We support children and youth on the front lines of the environmental sustainability crisis by providing opportunities, resources, skills, and safe spaces to meaningfully engage in environmental sustainability action and decision-making within their communities. Additionally, we empower them to influence policy processes at local, national, and global levels.
Across 28 counties in Kenya, ChildFund has installed 401 solar-powered water systems in schools, health centers, and communities. These systems provide children and families with safe, clean water, every day. With reliable access to water, children stay healthy, attend school more regularly, and grow up in safer, more resilient communities. Powered by the sun, this environmentally friendly solution reduces reliance on fossil fuels and promotes sustainable access to water for future generations.
In areas where environmental change fuels competition over scarce resources, ChildFund is working hand-in-hand with children, youth, and community leaders to build lasting peace. Through school-based Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) clubs, youth councils, and inclusive community forums, we support locally led solutions that promote dialogue, environmental stewardship, and peaceful resource sharing. By strengthening the link between environmental sustainability and social cohesion, communities are empowered to resolve conflicts peacefully and protect the natural resources they rely on.
In the face of the environmental crisis in Kenya, urgent action is needed, particularly from the youth. Recognizing this, ChildFund has partnered with LEAP Africa, Dow, Ustadi Foundation, Nairobi City County, and other stakeholders to implement youth-led environmental sustainability action projects. One notable initiative is the Youth Day of Service (YDoS), a month-long campaign celebrated alongside the UN International Youth Day in August. This initiative supports young people to take the lead in creating impactful solutions to address environmental challenges in their communities. Watch this video to learn more about this project.
