Tujukumike Child Protection Project aims to improve the well-being of children through strengthening formal and informal Child protection systems. This project aims to improve protection outcomes for children and their families by supporting the establishment of a safe and secure environment free from gender-based violence (GBV) and child sexual exploitation and abuse in Tharaka Nithi County, Kenya.

1. Strengthening Linkages Between Formal and Informal Systems: Building stronger connections between formal child protection services and informal community structures to create a more cohesive and responsive safety net for children.
2. Enhancing Awareness and Stakeholder Sensitization: Raising awareness and educating diverse stakeholders — including government agencies, community leaders, and service providers — about their vital roles and responsibilities in protecting children’s rights and wellbeing.
3. Community Education and Empowerment: Equipping parents, teachers, community members, and children with the knowledge to recognize signs of abuse, report incidents promptly, and foster a culture of respect, safety, and dignity for every child.
4. Advocacy and Policy Influence: Driving advocacy efforts to strengthen policies and improve coordination among child protection actors at all levels — from families and communities to sub-county, county, and national platforms — ensuring a unified and effective child protection response.

  ChorogUsan for Children provides the financial resources and supports the project’s strategic direction and oversight.
• ChildFund
  Leads the overall implementation, coordination, and management of the project. Coordinates government agencies, implementing partners, and community stakeholders. Provides technical leadership on child protection, gender-based violence (GBV), and safeguarding.
• Local CSOs
  Implements community-level child protection interventions in collaboration with ChildFund Kenya.  Mobilizes communities to prevent and respond to child abuse, neglect, GBV, and child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEA). Builds the capacity of community structures, caregivers, and local stakeholders on child protection and positive parenting.
• Directorate of Children Services
  Provides policy guidance and statutory oversight for child protection while coordinating government child protection services at the county and sub-county levels. It facilitates case management, referral pathways, and timely responses for children at risk of violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation, while strengthening and institutionalizing child protection systems to ensure sustainable, coordinated, and effective service delivery.

• School environments became safer as 105 teacher champions were equipped to identify, prevent, and respond to Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (OCSEA), School-Based Violence (SBVP), and Gender-Based Violence (GBV), strengthening schools’ frontline protection systems.
• 210 Child Champions emerged as active advocates for children’s rights, using their enhanced knowledge and skills to raise awareness and lead peer-led initiatives on OCSEA, SBVP, and GBV, contributing to a stronger culture of child protection among students.
• School governance improved, with 105 Board of Management (BoM) members trained to integrate child protection into school leadership, ensuring sustained support for safe and inclusive learning environments.
• 8191 children gained awareness and emotional support through school-based campaigns and psychosocial sessions, promoting resilience, safety, and informed decision-making among students.
• 90 trained Community-Based Child Protection Resource Persons strengthened grassroots prevention and response to Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (OCSEA) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV), ensuring timely community-led interventions
• 2769 community members were sensitized, leading to increased vigilance and a stronger collective culture of child protection within the community.
• 43 children Advisory Committee (CAC) members became youth advocates, actively engaging in child rights protection and driving awareness on GBV and OCSEA among their peers.
• 36 child protection actors enhanced service delivery through specialized training in effective case management, thereby improving the quality of care and support for vulnerable children.
• 30 staff members from charitable children’s institutions, NGOs, CBOs, and FBOs were trained on CPIMS, resulting in improved data management, case tracking, and evidence-based interventions.
• 5 functional child-friendly protection desks were established in Tharaka Nithi County, providing accessible, safe, and confidential spaces for children to report abuse and receive protection services.
• 400 children actively participated in the Day of the African Child, strengthening advocacy efforts and raising awareness of children’s rights through public engagement and celebration.
