Rapid response brings relief to drought-affected communities in Marsabit
August 15, 2024
Bati (6, Talaso’s daughter) feeds some of her family’s sheep, weakened by the ongoing drought, some animal feed provided to them by ChildFund at her home in Marsabit County, Kenya.
Bati, 6 has five siblings. The drought in 2022, which lasted longer than a year, was a constant source of anxiety for her. During that time, her father took their herds far away to search for pasture and water, while she remained at home with her mother, five siblings and elderly grandparents. During the drought, the numbers in their livestock herds steadily dwindled, leaving the family a lack of income to buy food. ChildFund stepped in and provided the family with supplementary food, cash transfers, animal feed for their weakest animals that had stayed behind, and a handwashing station to help fight the spread of COVID-19.
The same story goes for Gilo (6) when she was 2 years old and was a severely malnourished child living through a devastating drought in Marsabit County, Kenya. Four years later, Gilo is now enrolled in ChildFund’s programs (her sister is sponsored) and her health has greatly improved. Though she still has weakness and growth problems because she was so malnourished at a young age, she is today getting the food she needs and has started school. Her family navigated the drought and pandemic with the help of ChildFund and received supplementary food and cash transfers throughout the pandemic
